The challenge
Excellence exports fresh produce — king coconuts, papaya, tapioca — out of Sri Lanka by air and sea, and sells to overseas buyers who have never visited and never will. Everything rides on how credible the site looks in the first few seconds: an importer deciding whether a supplier can actually handle a container is reading for competence, not charm. The site also had to load quickly over long distances and from markets where connections are not guaranteed, which rules out the usual heavy CMS build.
The approach
I designed it in Figma first, then built it by hand — HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with PHP handling the enquiry form. No WordPress, no page builder, no plugin stack: on a site of this size a CMS would have added weight and an attack surface without buying anything, since the content barely changes. The result is a page that ships around 74KB of markup and gets an importer from landing to enquiry without waiting. Freight capability is stated up front — sea, air, own warehouses — because that's the qualifying question every buyer has.
What changed
- 01Designed in Figma, then hand-built — no CMS weight and no plugin attack surface
- 02Roughly 74KB of markup, so it loads fast for buyers on distant connections
- 03PHP enquiry handling wired directly to the form, with no third-party dependency
- 04Freight capability — sea, air, own warehouses — stated in the first screen
- 05Produce range surfaced as a running ticker rather than buried in a submenu
